The Drug Treatment Program (DTP)

The British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS is mandated by the provincial government to distribute all antiretroviral medications to people living with HIV/AIDS in the province. Currently, nearly 3,800 HIV-positive persons are accessing therapy in the province and over 8,000 have ever-enrolled. . Information from all recipients is entered into an electronic relational database, providing data for clinical and virological outcome studies of patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.

Clinique Médicale l’Actuel at Montréal

L’Actuel is a large clinic in Montreal that specializes in providing HIV treatment for persons with and at risk of contracting HIV (www.cliniquelactuel.com). Their mission is to offer high-quality healthcare in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and management of people living with HIV/AIDS.  The clinic has the largest population of French-speaking HIV-positive men and women in North America.  The cohort study that runs out of the clinic is based upon visits of HIV-positive persons under care.

The Electronic Anti-Retroviral Therapy (EARTH)

The EARTH cohort consists of 4,400 HIV-infected patients monitored for clinical progression in 9 centers in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.   The cohort was established in 2003 to use artificial intelligent tools to monitor host, viral and treatment parameters to predict disease progression or treatment failure.

The Canadian HIV-HCV Co-infection Cohort Study (CTN222)

The Canadian HIV-HCV Co-infection Cohort Study (CTN222)

This is the only cohort with a national mandate. The Canadian HIV-HCV cohort study is a CIHR/CTN funded prospective open cohort of co-infected patients recruiting from 11 centres across Canada. The cohort was established in 2002 initially at three University centres in Quebec with infrastructure funding from the FRSQ. The cohort has recently been funded by the CIHR to expand to 10 additional sites across Canada. The primary objective of this study is to determine the effect of HAART on liver disease progression in HCV-HIV co-infection. They will evaluate the contributions of important social factors, toxicities and immunologic factors that may modify fibrosis progression rates.

The immunodeficiency clinic is an outpatient clinic that has a multidisciplinary team to provide specialized care to persons with HIV/AIDS. The clinic is a regional centre specializing in care and research on HIV infection. It is also a distribution point for antiretroviral medication.
